Trauma therapy

Knowing how to work with trauma (overwhelm), when it is present in a person's history, is vital in order to avoid re-traumatisation. Working with trauma requires a completely different approach to working where no trauma is present.

This is a list of Web resources I have come across. Inclusion in this list is not a personal endorsement of content, similarly if a significant site is not on the list, it is either because I am not aware of it, or it is referenced from one or more of the sites that are on the list.

Trauma/PTSD some simple definitions from the useful Self Harm site
Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Internet Mental Health
Somatic Trauma Therapy working with shock and trauma. Babette Rothchild's site, see particularly her articles on "Applying the Brakes" and "Making Trauma Therapy Safe"

National Center for PTSD United States Department of Veterans Affairs

Books

Waking the Tiger: Healing Trauma
Peter Levine
North Atlantic Books, 1997
ISBN: 1-55643-233-X
A very accessible and clear read on the physiological basis of trauma.

The Body Remembers: The Psychophysiology of Trauma and Trauma Treatment
Babette Rothschild
Norton and Company, 2000
ISBN: 0-393-70327-4
An excellent coverage of the physiological approach to working with trauma with an emphasis on somatic awareness - probably better for the clinician.
